Car Smells and What the Issue Could Be

Some car odors can indicate that something is not working correctly in a component of your vehicle. While a mechanic can accurately diagnose and fix the problem in your car, you can do some detective work beforehand to figure out the issue and how quickly your car needs to visit the mechanic.

Burned Rubber

A burning rubber smell may be due to several issues. Oil can leak from the engine onto the exhaust pipe. When the engine is warm, the oil will burn and create a bad smell of burning rubber. This odor can also be attributed to an issue with the brakes. The brakes might get worn out, which causes friction and makes the components rub against each other.

Gym Clothes

If you notice the smell of gym clothes, you may have an issue with mold and mildew emanating from the air conditioning system. Moisture can collect on the air conditioning evaporator, allowing an environment for mold and mildew growth if the moisture is not eliminated. You may be able to clean out the system on your own by running air through the fan, rather than the A/C system, to dry the system out.

Burned Carpet

A burning carpet smell often indicates a problem with the brakes. The brake pads can produce this smell if it gets overheated. The smell can also arise from driving the car with the hand brake on. It can even start after you've recently used the brakes excessively.

Syrup

A syrupy smell coming from your car might not be all that unpleasant. However, it's an issue to take seriously. This smell can be caused by a coolant containing ethylene glycol leaking from the cylinder head or radiator. Regardless of the leak source, you should plan to bring the car to a mechanic for repair.

Sulfur or Rotten Eggs

The smell of sulfur can be a sign of an underlying issue with the engine or the catalytic converter. A failed catalytic converter signifies its inability to properly process hydrogen sulfide in the exhaust system, ultimately causing significant problems.
