Ford Engine Not Working

Why Is My Car Not Starting?

If your car is not starting, you'll need to do some troubleshooting to determine the problem. There are several possible explanations for a vehicle that won't start. The issues may range from a minor problem such as an empty fuel tank to a component that needs replacement by a mechanic. If you are having trouble determining the source of your car's problems, our expert mechanics can help with a diagnosis and make necessary repairs.

Dead Battery

Issues with the battery can frequently cause a car to stop in its tracks. Most battery manufacturers build their batteries with an estimated lifespan of 3-5 years. However, your battery's longevity can be negatively impacted by several factors. The battery will wear out sooner if you drive in hot or cold temperatures. Accidentally leaving the headlights or interior lights on in the car can also reduce the battery's lifespan. A dead battery will need replacement by a mechanic.

Empty Fuel Tank

If the car runs out of gas, it won't be able to take you to your next destination. Many vehicles have a warning mechanism that alerts you if your car is running low on fuel, such as a low fuel warning light on the dashboard. Your vehicle may also tell you how many miles you have remaining before the car is out of fuel. Problems with the fuel gauge can provide a false message that the vehicle is out of fuel.

Clogged Fuel Filter

Your car's mechanical system is designed to circulate clean and purified fuel through the engine and fuel lines. One of the ways it accomplishes that is through the fuel filter in the engine. The engine's fuel filter traps debris and other harmful contaminants from getting into the fuel system and causing problems. The fuel filter should be cleaned or replaced entirely between 20,000 and 40,000 miles based on its condition.

Faulty Ignition

The ignition in your car has coils that help convert battery power into energy that your car needs to run. Your vehicle will not start if the ignition breaks. The ignition can get damaged from moisture and other debris that makes its way into the mechanical system. If that happens, you'll need to have the part replaced.

Bad Starter

Your car's starter is an electric motor that helps the engine start. It's not uncommon for the starter to fail with frequent use. A sign that the starter is the issue is if you hear clicking when you try to start the car, but nothing else happens.
