What's New for the 2018 Ford Escape?

When the Ford Escape first entered the scene in 2000, it was a game-changer: it had all the space, comfort and features of a small SUV bundled with the excellent handling and driving dynamics of a passenger car. It was one of the first compact crossovers and today, the 2018 Ford Escape remains one of the best cars in that segment thanks to its modern technology, excellent powertrains and the great safety and value that it offers families. For 2018, Ford introduced a new trim level - the SEL - that combines some of the most popular optional features from the SE class with a number of Titanium features to create new trim with lots of value to offer buyers. The Titanium trim itself has also improved in both value and performance with the addition of the 2.0-liter high-performance EcoBoost engine as standard equipment. The end result is the best Ford Escape that we've seen yet.

Trims & Features

When you are planning on purchasing a new 2018 Ford Escape, the first thing you have to decide is the trim level that has the features and options that you prefer. The Ford Escape S is an old-school value model, perfect for drivers that enjoy the versatile design of the Escape and don't care about some of the newer technology available on the higher-end models. It is equipped with a traditional AM/FM/CD stereo, power locks and windows, air conditioning and cruise control, with the only concessions to modernity being the 4.2-inch LCD infotainment screen and a rearview camera. By contrast, the Escape SE offers an excellent selection of both standard and optional technology and comfort features, letting you pick and choose your favorites a la carte. A more powerful turbo engine, dual-zone climate control, satellite radio and a power driver's seat are standard, while the lengthy list of options includes everything from touchscreen infotainment and a sunroof to leather upholstery and navigation. It is the perfect model for getting the most value out of your investment if you are only looking for certain advanced features in your next Escape. The Ford Escape SEL is new for this year, and it offers most of the popular SE options bundled together as standard features. Finally, the Titanium is the driver's choice, thanks to its powerful 2.0-liter engine and inclusion of almost all of the features available on the lower trims.

Horsepower

2018 Ford Escape InteriorPowering the new 2018 Escape are three excellent engine choices that easily match or exceed similar offerings available on other compact crossovers. All of the engines are four-cylinder models and only the base S offers a naturally aspirated version. That engine displaces 2.5 liters to produce 168 horsepower that it pushes to the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission that is found on all of the other Escape models. The 1.5-liter engine is the smaller of the two turbocharged EcoBoost engines that the 2018 Escape offers, and comes standard on the Escape SE and SEL models with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. At 179 horsepower, it is both slightly faster and slightly more fuel-efficient than the base engine. Exclusive to the Titanium and standard for that trim is the 2.0-liter EcoBoost that is easily among the most powerful compact crossover engines today. Rated at 245 horsepower, it gives this agile crossover a truly performance-oriented driving feel.

Safety

2018 Ford Escape RearWith strong crash test results and a good selection of safety equipment, the 2018 Ford Escape is an excellent choice when it comes to a vehicle that will keep you and your family safe. The 2018 Escape has been rated at five stars by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as a result of their crash tests, while the Insurance Institute for Highway safety likewise gave it top scores on its moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint and seat tests. And with fully modern systems like lane-keep assist, driver drowsiness monitoring and adaptive cruise control with pre-collision braking, it works just as hard to avoid an accident as it does to keep you safe during one.
