The F-150 has received revolutionary changes over the past two years, including the introduction of an industry-first all-aluminum body and new technologies like Pro Trailer Backup Assist. While other automakers might take a break on implementing more big changes, Ford has plans to make even more groundbreaking updates to its award-winning truck.
Ford’s head honcho, CEO Mark Fields, told NPR that the company is developing a hybrid version of the truck and that it could be sold in dealerships as early as the year 2020. He said Ford is more interested than ever in electrifying its lineup and, while other carmakers might solely focus on cars and SUVs when it comes to this, Ford is leading the pack by bringing its best-selling truck into the fold.
Fields said the F-150 hybrid will have rear-wheel drive and that it will be a traditional EV rather than a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). Outside of this he didn’t offer many other details, but we’re sure shoppers can expect a full suite of safety, infotainment and driver-assist technologies to be included on the hybrid, just like the 2016 F-150 comes fully loaded with the best of today’s in-demand features.
The big question we’re sure many shoppers will have is how or if a hybrid powertrain will affect the truck’s performance and capability, and we look forward to learning how Ford will tackle any challenges related to this. When we have more details about the F-150 hybrid, you can bet that we’ll share them with you here on the Westway Ford blog!
