You take great care of your Ford: you adhere to a regular maintenance schedule, keep it clean and drive cautiously. But there's one place where drivers tend to second-guess themselves: the gas station. Most of the time, it seems that higher price translates to higher quality - so we tend to feel a little pang of guilt for opting for the cheaper regular gas over the premium option. But is premium gas even worth the few extra cents per gallon? Should you be using it in your car? Your friends at Westway Ford will explain.

It's human nature: if you put the word "ultra" or "premium" in front of something and charge a few cents more for it, it seems like the better option than something that's just "regular." But when it comes to gasoline, that may not be the case. All fuel grades contain roughly the same amount of heat energy per gallon: typically around 111,400 BTUs. The difference between regular and premium gasoline is in octane level. Regular gas has an octane level of about 87, and premium gas is normally around the 92 level.

So what does that mean for your car? A higher octane level is beneficial for high performance sports cars, but probably won't do much for your daily driver. Your best bet? Use the fuel type indicated in your owner's manual. Although it certainly won't hurt to fill your Ford with premium gas, it probably won't do you any favors either - so our advice is to save the money.
