Do you have a new driver in your household this year? This means that you will be taking over the job of teaching your 15 or 16-year-old how to drive from the very start. It sounds scary, but Westway Ford has three tips that will make your instruction a lot easier and safer for you and your teen. Once your teen passes their driver’s test you will sleep great at night knowing you helped raise a safe driver.

Set a good example yourself. We all know no one is a perfect driver, but we need to try and be. Your new driver is not only learning to drive behind the wheel, but also by watching your every move. Take time to check that you are wearing your seat belt, following the speed limit, not using a cell phone or just driving carefully in general. This could be anything from not running yellow lights to making sure to fully stop at stop signs. These things will help your driver when they get behind the wheel too.

Stay in the loop. Even after they pass their driver exam, make sure to still check in on them. Know where they are going and who will be riding with them. Letting you know they reached their destination with no problems would be a great idea too. The curfew may be a certain time, but be sure to sit down with your new driver & set one that works for you both.

Limit, Limit, Limit. Make sure to limit the number of people your driver has with them during their first few months of driving. This will benefit the driver and the passengers from getting distracted or being distracted. You may only want to let them drive family and close friends around at first too.

Parents, it might be difficult to grasp that your 15-year-old is finally old enough to drive, but this is an exciting time in their life. You will be there every step of the way to make sure they know what they are doing. If you follow these three tips, as well as others, your new driver will be driving great in no time!
